Popular Post Maniwaki Canuck
Great pick-up. Schmidt at 5.9 is waaaayyy better value than OEL at 8.25. This guy is a legit top 4 smooth-skating, puck-moving, offense first but still 2-way D. Thought he was super-effective against us. Costs us basically nothing. Benning totally vindicated here. Maybe he does a few more small moves like Leivo or a bottom-pair RD, but this gets us where we need to be. No massive step backwards and no compromised future: perfect. 1 3 5 3 1

-DLC-
Quote The 29-year-old defenseman scored 31 points (seven goals, 24 assists) in 59 regular-season games and nine points (two goals, seven assists) in 20 postseason games for Vegas last season. He has five seasons remaining on a six-year contract he signed with the Golden Knights on Oct. 25, 2018 ($5.95 million average annual value). Schmidt was selected by Vegas from the Washington Capitals at the 2017 NHL Expansion Draft. He has scored 140 points (29 goals, 111 assists) in 396 NHL games with the Golden Knights and Capitals. Defenseman Alex Pietrangelo signed a seven-year, $61.6 million contract ($8.8 million AAV) with Vegas on Monday.

He's played on a top pairing for one of the better teams in the league, so it's hard to argue against it. He's not in the Hedman, Jones, etc. category but not many are. 2
brian42
Schmidt and Holtby or Tanev and Markstrom? pretty close but considering the contracts Calgary had to dish out including to injury prone Tanev, I like it Demko is a big factor too. We need right side D though still.
Popular Post PhillipBlunt
Hopefully Jimbo can wheel and deal some of the $&!#e contracts now. I like that Schmidt is a more physical player than Tanev. Willing to drop the gloves too. He’s a pretty complete defenseman. Dr. Crossbar
Excellent! Was getting a bit concerned. JB's right, Schmidt will fit in nicely. Excited to see him in our lineup. 1

There will definitely be plenty of work to be done next summer. Sutter, Pearson, Baer, Edler all come off the books next year, but that only frees up about $17m, not enough to sign all three, never mind players that would need to replace those guys.

RWMc1
I was wondering if we would get him because of being a leftie that can play both sides. The price is right though. I was discussing this with someone in another thread. You were right.
48MPHSlapShot
So for those of you that know more about Schmidt, would you say he's our 2nd best Dman now?

For sure... glad JB walked away from OEL and hung on to that extra cap + assets. Surprised Vegas traded him in conference. I was impressed by him in the playoffs (I hated him). 1 1

Or you can look at it negatively and say there are 10 teams he dislikes more than us. Honestly though, if he's half as good as everyone says I can't be mad. 3rd rounder is nothing.
