June 16, 2023:  UPDATED TO INCLUDE OEL BUYOUT with MULTI YEAR FORECAST.

SEE UPDATED SPREADSHEET HERE:

A crazy idea, but what do things look like if we bought out OEL?

The cap hits are as follows:

2023-24:  $146,667

2024-25:  $2,346,667

2025-26:  $4,766,667

2026-27:  $4,766,667

2027-28:  $2,126,667

2028-29:  $2,126,667

2029-30:  $2,126,667

2030-31:  $2,126,667

I'm gonna assume the following:

- Trade Myers with $2M retained for nothing but a pick or prospect

- Trade Pearson with $1.2M retained for a pick or prospect

- Horvat re-signed at $8M AAV

- Kuzmenko re-signed at $7M AAV

- Various raises for the other pending FAs (Hoglander, Bear, etc)

Buys us some time to move Boeser later = more leverage in a deal.

Would be a lot easier to find a solid shut down top 4 LHD.

Thoughts?

If the goal is to gain cap space to re-sign Bo, we shouldn't.

This team needs a change. One easy way to inject young players is by trading veterans in their prime.

Trade Bo gives us 5 mil in cap space, which can then be used to re-sign Kuzmenko.

We could also eat up some cap and trade Myers if necessary.

No retaining salary on Myers for the same reason this thread's premise is a terrible idea.  Any GM who suggests creating dead cap for more than one season needs to be fired on the spot.  There is simply no excuse for the devastation this kind of move has done to the franchise over the years.

Myers comes off after next season.

Right, Bill Guerin was shot in the head the day he bought out Parise and Suter.

Are you planning on having me as the 6th D? Because i can assure you that cdc will not be kind to me if that happens

Our new tank commander. At least you would be taking some heat off of Stillman. The poor guy is being made into a scapegoat on CDC every single night.

He should have been fired for that for sure.  Absolutely no retained salary longer than one year under any circumstances.  No exceptions.

Given how Swedes' careers tend to age pretty well (they don't get hurt much and remain pretty positionally sound due to smarts), I might just be okay with letting his career play out; who do we have coming up the ranks to take his spot anyways?  Rathbone's not an option as he's more PP QB, Stillman is awful, Dermott maybe an option but looks pretty average... best not to rush Re-Petey's development even if he's likely our next top-4 LHD.  Perhaps in his last year we could trade him as a depth guy with retention to a contender looking for veteran help at the deadline.

If your can deal him with no cap retained and no sweetener, fine.

LOL, did Benning get another NHL GM job somewhere and the rest of us missed that - because that's the ONLY way that happens.

While I agree, he's nowhere near as useless as LE was - he's still nowhere near as good as his pay-level.  The NHL has become increasingly more financially stringent since the season JB acquired him making any thoughts of trading him without retention/adding virtually nil.

Face it people, if you don't want management to retain and/or add to a deal - OEL is here for good.
