  1. Dreaming of a potential forward lineup of

    Dahlen-Pettersson-Kakko

    Goldy-Horvat-Boeser

    Gadjovich-Gaudette-Virtanen

    Lockwood-MacEwen-Lind

Just need to get that D core a hell of a lot better

"Just need to get that D core a hell of a lot better"

That's the toughest part of the job.

    3. RetroCanuck

      RetroCanuck

@112 You'll have serious Cap issues if that were the case. Also guys like Dahlen, Goldy and Virtanen all have the potential to develop into very solid top 6 players.

@NewbieCanuckFan- I totally agree. Hughes is the only absolute guarantee I see in our top 4. Juolvei will be there too if injuries don't hamper him long term.

Be nice to get a couple more 1st/2nd round picks for the upcoming draft. Look for a couple D (especially right handed)  like Soderstrom, Seider and Honka.

    4. DADDYROCK

      DADDYROCK

Just as long as we don't go for anymore 5' something 180 lb. Defense Men.We have far too many already .

Love em' but they are not capable of being NHL defenders,as we have unfortunately been witnessing for far too long.

  2. Considering Granlund's deployment 5G 11P is pretty damn good. If he keeps this pace up he will be around 15G 35P which is pretty good considering his 3rd/4th line deployment and line mates.

OK, so I grossly xaggerated the high price part, but Schaller has been completely useless.

      Alflives

Would JB trade our Granny for Shinkaruk back?

Granny is a very useful player.  He's like a Swiss Army knife.  He can do a lot of different things.  I wonder if he could even play goalie, in a pinch?

      @Alflives

Granlund's not really good at faceoffs. I wish he could be better at that.

We need Guddy's presence.  Until we have another bopper, who can play, he stays put.

    4. Nucker 67

      Nucker 67

Nylander and Pettersson would be fun to watch. Both very elite, skilled players for the Top 6. But I guess Leipsic, Eriksson and Roussel in the Top 6 is okay too (not)  lol

  4. I cant wait for Del Zaster and Pooalot to be replaced by Juolevi and Hughes next year... The D core needs a massive change

    1. Quantum

      Quantum

D Core, not Markstrom, has been causing us to lose games. I mean, I'm at the point where I'd like to see Ashton Sautner and Evan McEneny get legitimate shots in this d-lineup before the end of the season. They'd actually be improvements over The Hitz King and Pouliot. Honestly, I hope Del Zotto gets dealt when Edler comes back. If Michael Kempny can net the Blackhawks a pick at last year's TDL, I'm sure DZ can get the Canucks back... SOMETHING!

    2. smithers joe

      smithers joe

are del zotto and pouliot the new sisters? personally, i wouldn't belittle them because their play isn't good enough.

they are trying their best, their best isn't always better than the speed of their opposition. hopefully we find better players and replace them.

  5. If San Jose is going all in this year then Josh Norris is definitely a solid prospect to target. Though we may be better off looking for good RD prospects or high picks to acquire them.

    1. Mike Vanderhoek

      Mike Vanderhoek

im confused, he is a Senators prospect.

      RetroCanuck

Aww didnt realize he was traded but knew he was drafted by San Jose. oops lol

  6. Can we take old man Edler off the first unit power play please. Guys reactions look like they've slowed down considerably.

    Stecher, Pouliot or Hutton please

  7. Pettersson with 1 goal in his first game, 2 goals in his second game...

I hope there are a lot of Canuck hats in the building for this game!

  8. Great opening night game. Goldy and Pettersson are so damn skilled together!

Only issue with this game was Boeser looked quite bad turnovers and no offensive contributions. Im sure he'll bounce back sooner or later but not a great start to the season for him.

    1. Drive-By Body Pierce

      Drive-By Body Pierce

Boeser did look a step behind a few times.

    2. -AJ-

      -AJ-

Boeser had some slower moments, but he also had some really good looking moments. I'm not too worried about him just yet.

    3. Drive-By Body Pierce

      Drive-By Body Pierce

Hopefully he can get his legs going, maybe why he missed the first 2 games last season. :o

...That and when his Fortnite addiction is under control when banned on the 6-game road trip. :P

      Holy OVER-reaction sports media!

  9. Honestly think theres a chance Gaudette makes the team out of camp, even ahead of Pettersson. Don't get me wrong I think Pettersson makes the team pretty quick here but wouldn't be disappointed to see Gaudette make the team out of camp and Pettersson start the season centring Uticas top line with Dahlen and Lind.

Gaudette just looks more NHL ready, not more talented, and not a better player then Pettersson in the long run, but more ready for the rigours of the centre ice position in the NHL.

There's no chance in hell Pettersson plays in Utica. He's a potential Calder winner.

      huh?

      based on what

1 game against not yet ready nhl prospects ?

where elias had an off game but still got 3 points ?

cdc never ceases to amaze me

how about we wait until tourney is over

      training camp has happened

and we see how these prospects do in preseason

this so quick to judge/ assess approach

      is mind boggling

you really think this is how team management

      and coaches assess talented prospects

damn we do live in such an instant society

  10. Gadj-Hughes(dreaming)-Boeser

    Dahlen-Pettersson-Virtanen

    The future is bright!

    1. 48MPHSlapShot

      48MPHSlapShot

I honestly think Horvat is somewhat wasted on the third line. I think that, if we do end up with Hughes, Pettersson slides over to the wing.

    2. Jaku

      @48MPHSlapShot

Agreed. Can't really see Bo ever being a 3C

      Pettersson - Hughes - Boeser

      Dahlen - Horvat - Virtanen ?

  11. Can we all just take a moment and appreciate what Benning has done for our prospect pool! He's made some mistakes along the way, but our prospect pool is the deepest its ever been and with some elite prospects! Hell our Hobey Baker winner isn't even considered in our top 5 by many people!

Pettersson, Hughes, Demko, Juolevi, Gaudette, Dahlen, Lind, Woo, DiPietro, Gadjovich, etc, etc, etc.

    Jim Benning, we thank you!

Omg... $780 and it's only August 23rd... I'm guessing the bidding goes well into the thousands. Doesn't end until end of the month.

  13. Anyone have the Athletic and can tell there 20 through 11 prospects?

They have MacEwen at 10 which somewhat surprised me so am curious to know who's below him.

    2. Where's Wellwood

      Where's Wellwood

I would think that 11-13 and maybe even Jasek at 14 has more potential than MacEwen

    3. RetroCanuck

      RetroCanuck

If MacEwen can get accustomed to his natural centre position next year and continue to put up points then he's a very good prospect. 0.5pts per game is pretty stellar for a rookie season. Is he better then a potential starting goaltender or top 4D remains the question?

    4. J-23

      J-23

If you read MacEwen prospect thread, some were saying he would be lucky to make the AHL.

  14. It would be stupid not to try and trade a forward this offseason. No reason to lose an asset if you can get a pick out of it. No reason to worry about competition with prospects such as Pettersson, Gaudette, Dahlen, MacEwen, Jasek, Lind fighting for spots. Also if one wants more competition we could sign some PTOs.

In the end we should clear some room so we don't lose valuable assets

      combover

Waivers and buy outs are more likely the only way vancouver can clear a roster spot.

Gagme has no value, eriksdone has been worthless and would cost us a pick to move,  bearcheese not sure how much value he has even he’s been a warm and cold player that’s been heathy scratched or long term injured every year he’s been in the nhl,not sure he’s a top 6 on most nhl teams.  And we keep signing veteran 3/4liner ufas to 3-4 year deal with m-ntcs.

This is benning last season here (finger crossed) his 31st place team and empty area (again) will end him. The plug love will stop and hopefully ownership see then need a GM with a spine not a sniveling clueless puppet.

The only tradable players on this team are the ones that we can’t afford to move.

Trade from a position of strength so we can trade 4th liners and bottom pair d men.

Cant wait to see who we draft 4th oa.

Too bad the expansion draft isn’t this season we couldn’t lose a valuable asset if we tried.

  15. Who plays 50 games in the NHL first?

      They have the early edge.

    4. -AJ-

      -AJ-

Gaudette is the best bet for sure. Juolevi will probably be second on that list followed by Demko at 3rd, largely because I think Demko will backup Markstrom in 2019-20 and won't be a start until late in that season or 2020-21. Dahlen still has to prove himself in the AHL before even making the team, so he's a wildcard.

  16. Case McCarthy in 2019 please!

Already 6'1 190lbs and would round out our future defence since he's a right shot!

    Juolevi-Woo

    Hughes-McCarthy

    Tryamkin-Stecher

    Rathbone-Chatfield

Now thats a defence Id love to watch!

  17. Going to be nice next year to have guys you actually WANT to see called up from the minors. Whether thats Gaudette, Dahlen, Chatfield, Demko, Brisebois, MacEwen, Palmu, Lind, Hughes?etc. It will be fun to have the ability to call up some of our best prospects.

  19. Does anyone else think McDavid is overrated?

Hes great off the rush but once he's stationary in the offensive or defensive zone he's just average.

In my mind he will never be the calibre that people think he will be.

Don't get me wrong he's a great player and he's young, but is he currently overrated?

    2. CRAZY_4_NAZZY

      CRAZY_4_NAZZY

McDavid is still young, he will round out his game as he matures, and will understand he can't be a one trick pony.  The rest of the league will get faster, and his oppositions will find ways to slow him down.

The final game against Edmonton at home was a good indication of that.  Tyler Motte literally shut McDavid down, skating toe to toe with him all game long.  McDavid will need to learn to use his teammates better and create offense beyond just the rush.

    3. Rob_Zepp

      Rob_Zepp

How can he be overrated?   Ignoring his own stats, he single handedly put Edmonton into the playoffs sacrificing individual awards for team success.   He was a back-checking star and finally learned that team play is what wins.

    4. J-23

      J-23

I think he passed up some good scoring chances yesterday against Finland.

  20. Best part about this final 4 is that none of them have won in a while, or ever. Tampa won in 2004 which was 14 years ago.

Im glad Pittsburgh and Boston are out for that reason

@Roger Neilson's Towel I'm stricken because on one hand I want Jets to bring a cup to Canada, but on the other Vegas is my new #2 favourite team behind Canucks and I really think a cup win for them would be an epic story to remember.

Wouldn't mind seeing Ovi win the cup either...

Nikita Kucherov and Victor Hedman are my favourite non-canuck players. If any of the 4 teams win the cup, I'll be happy!

calgary likes to burn through its coaches

the coaches seem to be recognized by the experts and league

as being a top coach in 1 year

and they are booted by the organization the next year

clearly the problem has been poor coaches

TSN is simply an arm of Leaf’s propaganda.  Leafs are really not very good.  Lamarillo knows this, and is jumping ship.  What does Babcock have left?  Two seasons and then he’s gone too.  Then the next group of LOSERS can try another rebuild in LOSER LEAF LAND.

  23. Its amazing how well our prospects have done this year! Especially when you consider how we only have Juolevi and Lockwood from the 2016 draft still in our system! Lets get that great prospect defencemen in the first round and another guy like Woo, Miller or Bahl in the second and we could be set for years to come!

  24. Would you trade,

      RetroCanuck

@-AJ-, yes but they had the key pieces you could build around. You need stars and those now come through the top end of the draft. Much harder to find gems in the later rounds like Detroit did.

Modern NHL you need that top end talent and then build around them. We have a few of those guys in Bo, Brock, Pettersson, Juolevi, Demko but we need more, especially on D if we wish to succeed and win cups.

    3. Ghostsof1915

      Ghostsof1915

I beg to differ Retro, our team is weak on D prospects. And defensemen are always in demand.

I'd like to see our first 3 picks as d-men. The next 3 on bpa.

      - Dahlin (ok wishful thinking)

      - If Samuelsson is still available in second round, otherwise Stanislav Demin.

      - Xavier Bouchard

The smallest d man in that group will be 6'2".  Because Utica needs some d-men too for developing.

    4. RetroCanuck

      RetroCanuck

Differ on what Ghost? The trades? Because I agree with you and do think we need those D prospects you refer to (I like Miller over Samuelsson) and trading pieces away for high picks and ending up near the bottom of the league are the way to get them.

Our problem isn't necessarily that we don't have D prospects, we  just don't have elite ones that you usually get through the top end of the draft.
