  1. I was wondering today something given some posters I have seen on CDC - why do people troll websites?   Let's take CDC - it is a site for Canuck fans to voice opinions, concerns and even despair with a team that is currently coming out of their down cycle so most fans know that a 29th place team is not perfect but have optimism and even some patience.   However, no matter how positive an issue is, there are a handful of people who simply want to take every issue and look for drama and implied "doom and gloom" even where there is no evidence of any such.   Being constructive critical is what a fan would do - hating on every single move is a troll.   So, I just thinking to myself, if why?    If you truly hate the Canucks so much  - why follow them?  If you are a fan of another team, is your life so empty that you get pleasure baiting Canuck fans?   Are there people out there that  insecure?

    Genuinely curious.   Just asking myself!

Which he was ban for.  Did that ban not assume the OP (as foolish as the choice of title was to us) knew his title had that horrible connotation?  Maybe he was a young kid, who meant no disrespect?

Yes, a sickening title to us, but to the OP, perhaps not.  How do we know what his intentions were?

the OP of that Nazi thread was told that it was inappropriate and given a lot of time to change it, but chose not to. In that case banning is justified imo. You have a right to free speech, just not anywhere you want it to be.

  3. Watching the NHL playoffs, it is clear that speed is the dominant discriminator.   Not size.   Speed.   The Vegas success is forecheck and speed.   Jets best weapon - speed.   Bolts look slow, down to a fast Caps team so far.

Travis Green started wanting a faster team that pushes the play.   He appears to have a focus aligned with current NHL success.

If the big players cannot skate, they are not long for today's NHL is what I am seeing.   That is why I am fine with Guddy as he skates very well for a big guy.    I don't disagree at all that size is important but when big teams all meet up, speed is the deciding factor.

Also interesting how some small guys (e.g Marchessault with 6 goals in 12 games) have been noticeable and sometimes even dominant and others (e.g. Ehlers who is zero for playoffs in 13 games) pretty invisible.   Skill is important, yes, but only if it can play with the speed and the intensity.

      Interesting playoffs so far.

    3. King Heffy

      King Heffy

All 4 remaining teams have a good mix of size, speed ans skill.  It's especially hard to argue Winnipeg and Washington haven't been using their size as an effective weapon.  Tom Wilson has been a huge factor for Washington and it's easy to see Virtanen being just as disruptive

  4. Is there another Canadian team that has improved as much on paper this off-season than the Canucks?   In the West in general, most seem treading water or declining?   Canucks still very young team and so many players should still be improving this season.   This is going to be fun.

Very high on Demko and intrigued by Holtby with Clark.   I am still not sure there is enough minor league depth though.   LD was a loss in my opinion.   I can see the overall SV% and GAA being as good as better though given how vastly improved the D corps is.    Hard to believe Canucks got two top four Dmen for a sum total of a third round pick.

years ago, i coached hockey with a guy who said he had been in boston’s system. he never played in the nhl but said that wren blair was his coach. i guess there were no goalie coaches back then. he asked blair what advice he could give him? blair said, stop the damn puck. i think his first name was dennis but i can’t quite remember. he also said, in warm up, the players would shoot the puck at his head. when he complained to blair, he was looked down on.

  7. What a great draft weekend for the Canucks.   Probably hit a home run with their first round pick.   Coming back to CDC to see some whining so hard is interesting.   Canucks as a whole got a lot stronger over the weekend and walked away with far more prospects than they started and picked one of the leagues most versatile top six guys in his prime and on a very good contract (who if he plays as he has is far more valuable than a non-lottery first round pick on average).   Added to the club friendly Edler signing, what a great week!

  10. CDC in summer is never a place where facts get in the way of a good thread/discussion but past few weeks are a new standard in that regard.  This is partially fueled by other "chat" sites and the media it would appear (including Vancouver media who seem to have lost the concept of what their jobs are).   The Vancouver Canucks have one of the best group of prospects in the entire league and arguably their best in their entire history.   At least one or two of those prospects will enter the line-up each of the next several years.   One of those is one of the better goalie prospects in all of hockey.  They addressed an issue on team toughness and face-offs without harming access to the top 9 forward positions for emerging youth.  They brought back who many (most?) regard as the planet's best goalie coach who took at cast-off tall goalie and turned him into a multiple Vezina winner in Columbus.   They have the runner-up Calder winner who if he had played a full season may have pushed for some of those first place votes.   They have a coach who seems to value where the game is going.

This team is going through a rebuild and seem to be checking sooo many of the key boxes.  Why all the angst and hate?   There are no guarantees but it is hard not to see real reasons for significant optimism with this hockey team.

I remember reading an article where the journalist claims that Tampa Bay can't be considered the best until Toronto plays its best (paraphrasing, but the meaning is there). in other words, Toronto hasn't played its best, so it is 'guaranteed' to succeed. Meanwhile, Tampa Bay's success is unsustainable, so it is 'guaranteed' to drop.

I can't locate the article anymore, but it was really crappy journalism. The writer was so delusional that I was shocked that the editor would allow it to be sent out.

    3. Ghostsof1915

@King Heffy I don't think Tavares was a problem. I see the reasons why he left. Duchene on the other hand.

That was a distraction. Nylander basically has got a great contract. But it's going to take him the rest of the season to catch up and get back into game shape. So they pretty much wiped out year one. NYI are making up for it by having everyone buy into Trotz system.

    4. King Heffy

      King Heffy

I'm not saying that Tavares himself was a problem, just the media attention and uncertainty.

Nylander's absolute trash who had his numbers inflated by Matthews.  Guy makes Vrbata look like a workaholic.

  13. Vancouver Canucks did two things today.

    1.  MUCH harder team to now play against and PK will be significantly better.

    2.  Added a ton of competition for roles that will create so much more in terms of the on-ice product.

Summer on CDC - not sure what it worse, those bashing the team even though it has yet to play a game or those comparing young players and prospects who have not even played a single NHL game to GOAT (Orr) or HHOF locks.   Both are essentially trolling the board but somehow the latter is almost more annoying.

  18. Just realized Canucks are paying $8.75 M  per year for two players in their prime who over past two seasons put up 44 goals 99 points and then 30 goals and 87 points.   Injecting that kind of offence into lineup along with their size and nature of play - nicely done Canuck management.

Really excited by the moves made this off-season.  In a vacuum, I was kind of angry about some of them as they happened, but taking a step back, and seeing that there is a general direction and vision to it....priceless.  We added 2 legit top 6 wingers, we added 2 defensemen that should change the complexion of the back end.  We should be strong enough to actually be....good!  You know how you fear this moment, like it's some kind of gift that is going to be snatched away?  I think a lot of fans follow this route where we can only win if we have multiple first overalls in the line-up.  But you look back at some of the recent drafts, and Pettersson and Boesser, both under-rated at the time.  Horvat improves every season like a beast.  We just need Hughes and Juolevi to join the party, and Virtanen to get 20 goals and 15-20 assists, and we're golden!  Oh, and goaltending, do we even have to go into that?

  22. I fully acknowledge I don't have the 40-50 years of fandom some of CDC seem to.   I also don't really give any credibility to the past management/players in terms of what it means to the present team and its future.   With that out of the way, I have been involved and following/playing hockey since before I could walk and part of that has always been an intense following of teams I like.   NEVER in that time have I had more optimism about a team to change its fortunes given the combination of management (NHL/AHL), coaches (NHL/AHL) current young players and current prospects PLUS the lottery additions this year (and probably next).    The Canucks this year were FUN to watch most nights and play a very fast, uptempo game that will translate well moving forward.

Bring on the future!   It will be a blast to watch this team develop.   There are so many development stories that still need to be written and so many sub-plots about competition for spots, who will be in AHL, what current prospects break down the door this fall etc.

      smithers joe

it must be twice as hard to bag skate with goalie skates on? doesn’t sound fair. a fellow, who had played in the boston chain, i coached minor hockey with claims he hated team mates shooting at his head during practises. i guess back then, there were no goalie coaches. he said when he asked wren blair how he wanted him to play, blair said, just stop the puck.

    4. Rob_Zepp

      Rob_Zepp

Only good thing about being a goalie is no one expects you to go fast when skating.   To be honest, it isn't that hard skating if it is line drills, it sucks if they are circle drills.   I had one enlightened coach who would get players who head hunted in practice have to stand in net with back turned and we got to use player sticks and aim at their assets from the hash marks.  No wind ups but I had a decent wrist shot.......
