[Waivers] Zach Bogosian

Recommended Posts

Wow, has he gone that far downhill??  Or is it the injuries?

Wouldn't mind if GMJB picked him up simply as depth in the stretch run (and hopefully playoffs).  Could be useful in a limited role since he's a UFA after this season anyways.

why bother to do this if you're Buffalo? its not like its going to be a playoff year for them. I suppose they could be giving him a chance to play somewhere else since he's un-tradable.

Or it's a bit of a message to guys who might actually want to be there but aren't pulling their weight. The AHL is not where an NHLer wants to be... obviously...

I remember when some on CDC were creaming to get this guy.

Bogosian might not be a bad choice as a depth piece for the post-season.  $5 million is a bit rich, but he is on the final year of the deal.  Considering that the Canucks are hoping for Tryamkin to return hopefully this year... not sure if there is any room for him, unless someone on the Canucks defense has a nagging injuring and they can use that LTIR trick like back in 2011.

Baertschi for Bogosian (retained to balance out the cap and after he has cleared waivers). They might be hard pressed to add players next year given their play, so having Baertschi signed for next year might be beneficial and could replace Sheary who has been underwhelming for them.

He will get claimed.  Leafs are desperate for D.  Maybe the Blues as well.  Actually, I could see him performing better on a team like the Blues.

I think if Dubas has to tighten his belt any more he'll split in half.

IMO he will clear and once he does, if Buffalo really wants to get rid of him, they'll have to retain 50% of his salary and get like a 7th rounder in exchange (or a useless D- prospect)

That is a reasonable idea, but we would probably have to add for them to take on salary for next year.  They won’t retain salary just for the sake of getting a waiver guy like Baertschi back. Maybe a prospect and conditional pick if he re-signs with us.

They seem like they will want to (yet again) tear it down as they have a ton of players on expiring contracts.

There is every possibility that the guy has just been beaten down by playing on Buffalo and has never been on winning teams or made the playoffs in his entire career (and you can’t pin that on him).  He could play like a man possessed if actually given a chance to play meaningful games for once.

He could also be a target in the offseason if his value has been hurt a lot and comes relatively cheap.

It doesn’t make sense for Buffalo to just be demoting him as they don’t need to add for this season and it doesn’t clear enough cap space to eat a bad contract.  Maybe it is just punitive for the guy wanting a trade and deciding to play the kids instead of wasting minutes on a pending UFA.

They can have Palmu or a 6th/7th rounder.

Cap space isn't a concern for them. Baertschi could get back into the NHL for them as soon as he's traded. The retention (probably only 1.5 million or so) is only so that we can fit him in and once again isn't a concern for them. They're not getting much back for Bogosian, but they get a slight gamble towards a potential middle 6 guy that basically replaces Sheary (in whom they could try to sell for picks/prospects).

If this were to happen, then I'd be looking to trade Stecher for a pick which gives us more insurance at RD while we hopefully wait for Tryamkin and if he doesn't return this season, then we have some size that we could bring up for the playoffs.

When you do the math it really seems like Stetcher may be the odd man out moving forward. Too bad but business is business. Realistically what is he worth? I'm guessing at least a second? Second and a B prospect?
