Pretty sure they will hit over 400,000 deaths before all is said and done.

They'll hit that before inauguration day

http://www.covid-19canada.com/

In a sense they are already over 400,000.

Take their current cases total  7,731,560  and find 1.7% of that number       131436     . That number plus the folks that have already died, 341,128 comes to over  472,564

And more people get covid everyday.

“I was being very conservative I see. Oh crap...did I just use that nasty word.”

That is what bugs me about Trump and his lying mob. Even words like socialism/conservative/communism (community)law and order are an immediate trigger for a lot of people.

Of course there is/was....you ban travel.  Too late though.

Not sure why the world hasn't done that....no one needs to travel right now.  There's this thing called the internet that connects us for business and other reasons.

Bingo.

Canada/BC is great but the one knock is they don't drop the hammer when required.

To my knowledge this variant and apparently another (or the same) from South Africa have been found in almost every major country so far

The big fear is a change in the protein sheath around the actual virus which would make the vaccine useless

Still lots traveling. Alberta plates outnumber BC plates in town today.

Can confirm.  yesterday and today the local mall parking lot was at capacity in Penticton.  Numerous and I do mean significant amounts of red plates

With the southern okanagan being a hot spot destination for snowbirds there are a LOT of families visiting here.  My gym has refused any and all drop ins from outside of the okanagan area and has requested ID from everyone who attempts to drop in.  they're not messing around

This seems to be a good description of the changes:

Quote

...this mutation, known as N501Y, seems to have helped the SARS-CoV-2 spike protein attach "more readily to the human cell receptor ACE-2."

"A mutation is simply the presence of a change in the nucleotide sequence of the RNA of the virus… that causes a change in an amino acid residue in a virally expressed protein," Evans said.

He added that this mutation to how the spike protein binds with human cells is likely why the variant is "more transmissible than others."

Unless British Columbians are willing to subsist only on BC products, which I highly doubt, you’d still have to factor in people who drive the trucks, navigate ships, operate customs, work in logistics, etc.

I wish it were as easy as limiting travel.

"Essential" versus non essential.

Most "travellers" aren't going abroad to acquire products.   They're vacationing and visiting, which is quite different than a supply chain.

Tbh half of the reason is the virus, about a 1/4 is the lacklustre government response - always reactionary. The other 1/4 is that even when the government does get something right they pretty much think it won’t happen to them or that they are above the rules.

the fact that the train stations were crammed hours after the tier 4 announcement of Londoners fleeing to second homes or family, says it all really.  And surprise surprise cases outside of London where second homes are located have started to spike.

I hear ya, got lots of friends and family over there.

My Aunt in England, who has the extra pleasure of battling cancer during this pandemic, is saying that so many people are not respecting the rules.

We're seeing the result.

I agree that limiting non-essential travel would help but the original point was that it was always impossible to prevent the new strain from getting into Canada. People need to keep in mind how infectious this new strain is; you only need a couple of undetected cases for it to propagate.

At the end of the day, love it or hate it, unless you limit all travel, the new strain is getting in.

My point is that you reduce the odds as much as possible and allow for better monitoring in the process.

Flights in are constantly being flagged for COVID cases and so reducing the numbers would make for an easier time of tracking/isolating cases.

It doesn't have to be "all or nothing".  The strain is getting in but making sure it's not flooding things is vitally important.  Being able to contain it and that's made easier if there are less people arriving here.

UK reports another record day of virus cases at 41,385

Mon 28 Dec 2020 16:17:32 GMT

The worrisome rise in UK cases continues

The worrisome rise in UK cases continues

This is the first day with more than 40,000 confirmed cases.

An optimist would say this reflects the Christmas lag; a pessimist would say it reflects the more-virulent strain. It's going to take a few days to sort through it.

The UK also added 357 people to the death toll.

It is likely human behavior driving this.  The variant may be just a coincidence/founder effect.

Here around the 7:00 mark, Dr Griffin shares anecdotes from what his British friends are telling him.

I'm glad I live in Canada.

https://www.cbsnews.com/news/china-coronavirus-wuhan-citizen-journalist-zhang-zhan-sentenced-wuhan/

Beijing — Zhang Zhan, a 37-year-old former lawyer and citizen journalist in China, was sentenced to four years in prison in Shanghai on Monday for her reporting on the coronavirus outbreak in the central Chinese city of Wuhan early this year. She didn't immediately say if she would appeal the sentence, her lawyer, Zhang Keke, told CBS News.

During the start of the coronavirus pandemic, Zhang Zhan's live reports and essays were widely shared on social media, grabbing the attention of authorities. She was fiercely critical of the government for its virus containment measures and eagerly sought answers to the silencing of whistleblowers and other citizen journalists.

Zhang was arrested in May and was officially convicted for "picking quarrels and provoking trouble," a vague charge often brought against activists and critics of the government in China.

Zhang's trial on Monday lasted less than three hours. She was sentenced to four years in prison.
