[Report] Multiple Players Will Not Extend in Calgary, Expected to be Traded

There's definitely something going on in Calgary when none of the players want to stay even after dumping Sutter. Losing Tkachuk and Gaudreau and now Hanifin, Lindholm, and Backlund all apparently wanting out is a pretty major red flag.

I think this is something we will see more and more across the league. Modern players want more control of their careers as early as they can so unless you are a destination city or model franchise you could have trouble retaining players. Not to mention we are in unprecedented times in regards to the salary cap, why would anyone want to sign a contract right now when everyone predicts the cap to jump significantly in the next couple of years? Much better financially to be a UFA in the next couple of years than to sign an extension with one team before knowing who will have cap room and if you can have your pick of teams at a higher number. If I was an agent that is what I would be counseling my clients to do.

With the mass exodus from cow town maybe they consider:

TO VAN

Hanifin with permission to explore extension in advance

2023 4th

TO CGY

Brock (1 mill retained)

Hoglander

2024 1st top 9 protected

Think that's a bit too much value for Hanifin unless we get a depth guy back.

I think Boeser + prospect (Rathbone or Hoglander or 2nd rounder) should be enough. Hanifin has said he wants out so the value should go down (a bit like how Kane's value did).

Kane had an NMC and only wanted to go to NYR.  There were no other teams bidding.  Hanifin has an 8-team no trade and can be sent anywhere else - whoever offers the most is the team that will get him.

Damn that’s way too much to give them.

Brock with 1M retained is a value player.

Hogs potential is too high.

1st next year plus Hogs or Brock. Not both.

I’d do Brock 1 mil retained, 2024 1st and a 2023 3rd but they can probably get more than that from someone else, out of conference.  Would love Hanifin though.

Maybe they’re sick of all the 120lb accountants larping as cowboys.

Coffee literally spurted out my nose as I read your comment :D

I don’t know if there has been a better description of Calgary ever written.

Calgary is the new Winnipeg. We should be able to trade Garland to one of these teams. He has 3 years left on his contract so at least he will stay with them for the awhile.

Garland for Zadorov…

Most teams lately want to avoid players with term… these teams will need players under club control badly.  If there is anything we have a surplus is “ok” contracts that are just slightly overpaid but less than what a undesirable franchise would have to pay on the open market.

Garland for Zadorov… Miller+Silovs for PLD+Stanley

That is some major surgery right there.

Kuzmenko-Petterson-Beauvillier

Mikheyev-PLD-Boeser

Podkolzin-XX-Hoglander

Pearson/Joshua-Aman-XX

XX

Hughes-Zadorov

Soucey-Hronek

Stanley-Myers

Burroughs-Tryamkin (I had to throw that in there)

…defence move up to average or better from one of the worst in the league, plus with some serious size to make up for a smaller forward group.  Imagine if four of your top 8 D were over 6'5" and you still have plenty of puck moving ability?

Things would look a lot less bleak to me if we could pull off a couple moves like this.
