@WarhippyThat's why I said 2nd round pick and a decent prospect instead of a 1st round pick or a blue-chip prospect.

Since the Canucks have a Top 3-5 prospect pool now they can afford to part with a "B" level young forward and a 2nd round pick in order to free up 6 million in cap space to bring in a new top free agent to replace Eriksson.

i did not intend my post to suggest they should be thrown to the wolves now

just that the question is not completely offside but relatively fair

S'all Good Man appears to be expressing a valid concern as well

that these kids should not be thrown to the wolves before they have gained some more maturity

expecting as kid of 18 or so to respond now to the pressures of playoff hockey is a bit ludicrous

perhaps in 4 or 5 years, with better preparation, they will develop to be able to manage those expectations

Too much money to their young guys too soon, leaves no money for a solid veteran presence, forcing the young guys to be responsible for too much of the heavy lifting: PK, D-Zone starts, and hard match-ups.

The obvious answer for why they get coverage is because they get ratings. The more interesting question is how they get those ratings. You don't have to be good or even popular to drive ratings but you have to be something that people care about. I think the hatred for the Leafs actually drives ratings for the networks. In response we should treat them with indifference. Now how do I convince people to stop hate-watching the Leafs.

    3. JM_

      JM_

@Toews oh for sure. CBC has used that for as long as I can remember, piss on Vancouver to get them mad and watching while being fluffers for whoever is coming to town for the HNIC game. Works like a charm.

If he's retained it means we probably ship out another big ticket forward, probably Boeser. It's not realistic to keep the gang together going forward.

Boeser's a pending RFA, Bo's a UFA the same offseason as Miller, Pettersson will eventually need a new deal, Hogs and Podz will get raises, we'll need to replace Hamonic and that'll cost more than 3M, we may have to pay a tad more to replace Myers once his deal expires. We still need a legit 3c, and on and on. A team can only allocate so much to their top six.

    4. Phil_314

      Phil_314

@Coconuts I agree, barring we go the LTIR route, teams tend to trade expensive support players and I think we'll ultimately have to go all-in with the core and add peripheral guys (luckily that's JR's specialty).

Build around Demko, Hughes, Petey, Garland, Hog/ Pod, OEL (no way we can move him) and one of Miller/ Bo.  Guys like Pearson/ Dickinson/ Poolman/ Hamonic/ Myers/ Motte and probably Boeser will eventually need to be shipped off to recoup value.

Nature wise though, it's gorgeous. I won't argue that at all. The city counsel is corrupt and incompetent as hell though.

    3. Green Building

      Green Building

You've certainly touched on something I've been wondering about lately. Nanaimo has the fastest growing population on the island (I think), and with all the people there there needs to be jobs sustaining them. You're right that it's definitely a town where you're better off already having a group of friends to hang with as it's a tougher social nut to crack than Victoria. I've never had trouble finding stuff to keep me busy there, but it just depends what people are looking for entertainment wise, and I know a lots of people in that area.

When I was a young adult there I was in University, then shipped right off to Van. I'd move back in the right circumstances. I'll gladly concede that It isn't a Vegas-like metropolis, but I don't think it's trying to be either.

I wonder what 22-30 year old peeps do for full time work if they aren't specialized or university educated anyways. That's got to be tough in any city.

    4. BananaMash

      BananaMash

It is tough in any city for sure, but due to our booming population (due in part to artificially stimulating residential development but that's an argument for another day - we are a bubble waiting to burst) most of the low skill full time jobs have been fractured into part time work to be able to employ more people.

Our unemployment rate was (I believe) top ten in the country at some point. It's come down a lot, but unfortunately that's due to job fracturing and the housing boom. It's not particularly sustainable and they're going to have to figure out some way to turn our population growth into something more stable for the future.

I'm fortunate that my university education was enough to carry me into full time work. But unless you're a contractor or tradesman it's a bleak picture here right now.

It's a city with a lot of potential and very poor execution. The Jake Virtanen of island cities, if you will.

    3. King Heffy

      King Heffy

If anything, I'm being overly generous to Barrie.  He has not done anything over his own career to prove he has any interest of learning to actually play defense.  While some may be willing to put up with the atrocious play in his own end, I don't think that kind of play is acceptable in the NHL.  You don't win Cups with defensemen incapable or unwilling to play like NHLers in their own zone.

    4. JM_

      JM_

looking at the numbers today it looks to me like what happens is when Barrie is paired with a good partner they can really drive play but that partner has to really make up for the deficiency you point out. Man did TO ever give up a lot for the experiment.

It's crazy though, how much of the food supply is large factor in the overall health crisis in North America. Green Building

Sweet, going to watch that vid later. I agree with @Mr.DirtyDangles, our food is responsible for many of our medical afflictions. The Western diet is, at times, pure sh*t.

Doctors aren't doing anyone any favours by over prescribing things like antibiotics, but it isn't entirely their fault. If you are a doctor who own a practice with patients who walk in with the common cold or flu demanding pills to placate their placebo craving mentalities over letting nature take it's natural viral course, then you are a doctor in a bind: give the mom or dad with a sick kid their lousy prescription after attempting to educate them on the matter, or do not and receive poor reviews about you as a doctor.

I sympathize with doctors as they have to deal with people some of us would roll our eyes at, and instead of taking the hit online, they write a scrippy.

If we could improve our diets we would be so much better off, but we definitely have a need for medical science. People really need to educate themselves a little more, myself included, so when topics like this come up in real life it's easier to have a conversation using facts instead of wives' tales.
