Most fans probably don't realize how close we were to getting Gretzky. His book says that they made a deal and everything was done. It was very late around one in the morning. Gretzky needed to go over it with his wife because always did and he fully expected to sign in the morning after talking to her. He didnt want to wake her up which seems reasonable....He still expected things would be fine even though he didn't do what Vancouver brass wanted the night before....Stupid. all those break away passes to Bure and Mogilny....wow. Plus the Bertuzzi incident and the Brashear incident and the Lidstrom goal from center ice... Luongo....Keenan...Drafting Nedved over Hall of Famer s... The pressure to draft Nedved was intense, playing as he did for Seattle. He just got a bit ratty after Bure arrived on the scene and stole the limelight. Then the fans turned on him when he asked for Gretzky's stick after a playoff loss. He had a few good years with us, the Pens and the Rangers.
