Kovalchuk is walking, talking, skating hot garbage both on, and off the ice. Especially off. Montreal is dealing with a rash of injuries. I would have bet $5 he would have signed with PIT, WSH or TBL Yeah. I think these guys love the limelight of hockey there. Markov and Kovalev seemed at home there.

It won't cost them anything other than salary basically. He only has 1 year left after this year. Although his Cap hit next year will be $3.36 Million his actual salary will only be $2.4 Million. It is possible but more likely at the deadline if he is healthy. Edited January 3, 2020 by Borvat

Its not like he's still got speed or is a physical player, he'll need to be slotted into some prime minutes to put up numbers. Seems like a desperation move to me. Coconuts
Honestly, that's a pretty savvy move. If he wants to play in the NHL next season he's got everything to prove right now. There's zero risk for Montreal here. Without the expectations that come with a 6m+ salary I imagine Montreal will be content with what he brings. They have the room in the top 6 right now. They are somewhat desperate. So what. It’s costing them nothing to slot him in. I’d rather they give him a shot than Dale Weise

He can still do some damage in a powerplay specialist role, two years ago he scored 30 goals in 50 KHL games. The guy has scored over 430 NHL goals. There is definitely a risk in bringing in a sour PoS trouble maker. Kovalchuk is a bad influence especially on a younger building team like the Habs. grandmaster
Wow for league min and a 2 way contract? How can anyone say this is bad?!?!? If he just scores 10 goals, this contract is a success. Benning, where the hell were you on this? If Green has issues with his defensive play then he can use him mostly on the PP.
