Ferland to Edmonton makes sense for both sides in my estimation. Does either team say no?

you really don't know what you are talking about with LTIR contracts. IF LTIR contracts created cap space to create a playing roster over the 82.5 limit they would be the most lucrative contracts in the league, however they do not do not allow that. when a player is placed on LTIR a thing called ASCL is calculated. ASCL stands for accruable cap space limit. a team can not go over the ASCL. think of the ASCL as the new cap limit, and it can't ever be higher than 82.5 million, only lower.
you could have 10 billion dollars of cap space but your roster of "playing" players would never exceed 82.5 million in the regular season because of the ASCL.
Tampa Bay never had a playing roster worth over the upper cap limit in the regular season when Kucherov was injured. it was only during the playoffs that could they exceed it because there is no upper cap limit in the playoffs.
so knowing this, Ferland will not return to the nhl in the playoffs. Ferland will not help edmonton or any other team with thier cap, never.
-
there is a scenario where a team could stack up on injured players that wont return until the playoffs start but its very risky. if the player or player's is/are deemed healthy before the playoffs start they might be forced into losing some player's for nothing or even paying draft picks to get rid of them. if they are over the cap after the trade deadline they will be forced to waive players until they are under the cap and they likely must be claimed. so likely the player or players they waive will be one's they don't want to lose, becuase teams won't willingly take on garbage contracts for free

Any news on a potential Ekblad trade?
-
Have they already had media availability for the year? Did I miss it or are there plans of that happening anytime soon?
-
even when jim’s being vague, you can still gain a little insight into what he is planning. both jim and travis knows what this team needs to go to next level. the moves he needs or wants to make won’t be easy, but he’ll try. he’s already said that teams want players on our team. i doubt they want the players that fans want moved.
imo, we need a top 4 d man and a little muscle. i could see him making a deal like that got him miller.
-
-
Well we need the cap space for the year when we're re-upping Hughes and Pettersson. With cap staying where it is for the next 2 years, it is going to take an overpayment to get Eriksson's contract off the books (without us retaining). We're actually getting a high 2nd rounder back from OTT, which is essentially a first. I actually don't think it's an overpayment, if anything I'm not sure OTT will go for the trade.
I actually had Sutter in a trade instead of Loui where I was retaining 2 mill on Sutter and sending him to EDM for a pick. But getting Sutter off the books doesn't help us when re-signing the 2 big ticket RFAs so I went back to Loui.
EDIT: And that trade actually fixes our salary cap issues for the future. We would still probably lose Pearson when his contract is up but we have some young kids coming up that can replace him like Podkolzhin who plays a somewhat similar game.
-
Should the NHL allow clubs to incorporate player/team options into contracts?
-
All those saying TG is the one keeping the players from playing physical, he didn't mind slotting MacEwen in on the 2nd line replacing Eriksson after his fight. Seems to me like he's rewarding the guy for his physical play. I never bought that narrative - it started last year with the Florida incident when he did actually tell guys not to go after Matheson, but that was an isolated incident imo. There was also a Canucks behind the scenes video released recently (will try to find it) where in his pre-game speech in the locker room he tells guys to be physical as well. I will try to find the video and post later.

i agree @Squamfan I think it is the culture and the culture is driven by market demand as well. When my interest in hockey really peaked circa 2006-2007 I remember lots of fans and media alike would get on a player's case if they took a penalty that offset a 2 min PP we got as a result of a bad hit. They'd call it a stupid penalty. F**k the 2 min PP I want blood if one of our guys goes down. That attitude is what makes players think twice about standing up for each other, let alone be the aggressors. It was over a couple of seasons and then MG with his dumb f*king quote about turning the other cheek really set this feeble and fearful culture into motion.

Fun little proposal:
To EDM:
Boeser
Horvat
Juolevi
Lind
To VAN:
McDavid
Roussel- McDavid - Virtanen
Miller- Pettersson - Gaudette
Pearson - Sutter - Eriksson
Schaller - Beagle - Bailey/MacEwen
Baily/MacEwen
Ok maybe not that little I know this would never happen which is why I didn't post it as a formal proposal, but it's just fun to think about. Would the value be similar? 2 major core pieces for the roster - 1 also replaces Puljujarvi's value in a trade, a top 4 projected Dman that is knocking at the door (so they can move one of their contracts on the backend), and a middle six piece that should help with production if not this year then next year. They also get a little bit of cap relief
What do y'all think?

Give JB his contract extension already.

I disagree. As much as I like most of the moves he made, it's the same argument CDC makes if JB makes questionable moves or picks: We need to wait and see.
If we're going to "wait and see before coming to conclusions" only when JB makes seemingly questionable moves, we have to "wait and see before coming to conclusions" when he has had a seemingly good offseason. It's a results based league, and rightfully so.
-
We keep complaining about injuries every year, especially on defense - and they're key injuries to our top 2 Dmen (Edler and Tanev), yet people always want to bring them back every year.
Cut ties with these 2 already and look at bringing in more durable Dmen. Tanev's defensive ability can be replaced, Edler might be more of a challenge but we have a lot of quality LD coming up the pipleine that can take his minutes. He's not as irreplaceable as people think. I'm sick and tired of the injuries excuse every year then doing nothing to change the situation.

@Nuxfanabroad as a huge Edler fan I really hope we don't give him anything close to 6 mill.
Alex has exercised his NTC... he's been well paid over the years... it's time to take a home town discount if you're going to neg a trade to a contender to bring back assets. Short term deals... 3-5 million, 95% paid as bonus... maybe throw him a condo under the table if he'll agree to go under.
-
@naslund.is.king That's the point I think. Nothing is new... but we keep expecting the injury situation to change.
@Nuxfanabroad I get that, but I honestly just don't see management saying that to Edler. If they give him a deal without any NTC protection or very limited (10 team no trade list), then I could maybe get behind it, but I just don't see them coming to terms without a full NTC. I can even see Edler's camp pushing hard for a NMC so that he has to get protected in the expansion draft.
@King Heffy The point is that we give our many young players in the organization a shot, and maybe signing a durable vet that is defensively aware is enough - someone who can handle close to 20 mins a night in a shutdown role (maybe a Jordie Benn). Hutton can pick up the slack, and we can still give the kids some rope. We have a lot of talent in the pipeline on LD and many of them have put in their dues in the minors (Brisebois, Juolevi, Hughes, even Sautner). With the defense corps you mentioned, I'm willing to bet money that Edler and Tanev will once again both get injured together and miss significant time, and we will once again find ourselves swimming up sh*ts creek with our top 2 Dmen out of the lineup.
Also just an aside on Myers, I'm not as high on him as everyone else seems to be. He's big but he's not mean in any way, and he doesn't really use his size the way people might think he does. The only reason he plays a little physical is because he's on a Jets team that has a pack mentality culture. He's decent defensively (not great), but he's not offensively gifted so I'd be very wary about the deal I'd give him.
-
Ball hockey leagues are ridiculous in the Lower Mainland. Stupid expensive, and they fill up like crazy. I'm looking for a bunch of people to get a group together and just play for fun. Are people interested in forming a group that can get together once a week and play ball hockey? Purely for fun, non-competitive so anybody can join.
I'm thinking somewhere in Burnaby/Vancouver/New West depending on what the majority is interested in. I can do a poll if there is enough interest. I'm thinking outdoors because honestly the weather here doesn't really get bad (no crazy cold days), but if it's coming down hard or it's getting close to 0 degrees, I'm sure we can find a rec center gym to rent.
Hopefully there's enough interest and we can take it from there.
-
There's a small outdoor rink where I played inline hockey that is getting little use these days beneath Burrard St. Bridge at Sunset Beach. Even on the weekends during summer it was empty compare to 5 -10 years ago when it was packed all day.
Just thought I'd put that out there and btw there is plenty of pay parking available between now and May...

Anybody know how to find hit stats for the AHL? I've done a very extensive Google search with no luck...

@-AJ- No worries I've come to the conclusion that they are a national treasure that need to be excavated from a cave somewhere in Nunavut, and a brave hockey soul must do so at their own peril.

Louis CK is back! Great man, even better comic! Critics can go f themselves.

@Vanuckleswhen you are in a position of power there are some things you just shouldn't do. Not saying Louis CK has to spend the rest of his life in obscurity for this and it's too soon for a comeback, but a timeout for him was needed before everyone hopefully heals and continues on in life.

I'm a bit confused as to how this upcoming season is the Vancouver Canucks 50th season...?? Can someone explain that math to me? Canucks joined the NHL in the 1970-71 season. Our 40th season was the 2010-2011 season, so shouldn't our 50th be the 2020-21 season?? Is this not actually our 48th season?
-
I posted this in the Canucks Top Ten prospects thread, but I was elated when I really thought about all the prospects in our organization already., I thought more people could use positive thoughts on a Monday, so here:
1. Pettersson
2. Hughes
3. Juolevi
4. Demko
5. Dahlen
6. Gaudette
7. Lind
8. Dipietro
9. Woo
10. Gadjovich
It is a good feeling when you have to think hard to make a top 10 list for your prospects. So many dark horses that can steal the show... Lockwood, Brisebois, Jasek, Rathbone etc. not to mention Boeser, Virtanen, and Horvat who are already contributing on the team. If Pettersson can play C in the NHL and be as impactful as he is on RW, we're pretty much set for the rebuild:
Dahlen - Pettersson - Boeser
Gadjovich - Horvat - Lind
Leipsic - Gaudette - Virtanen
Palmu - MacEwen - Lockwood/Jasek
Lockwood/Jasek
Hughes - Tryamkin (another question mark, hopefully he comes back after his KHL contract is done)
Juolevi - Woo
Rathbone - Gudbranson
Brisebois/Stecher
Demko
Dipietro
Many prospects will not reach their potential, but we already have a full cupboard. If JB and company keep doing their thing at next year's draft, then we will really have an overflow of prospects, and we can start making trades for impactful young players like Panarin for example. I'm hoping for just 1 more year of tank, and a chance to draft J. Hughes. After that, I expect management will start to push hard to make the playoffs in the 2019-2020 season, which I believe is the last year for Benning's extension. I would anticipate if management stays the course, then how we do in 2019-2020 will be the deciding factor in whether or not JB gets another extension and enjoys the fruits of his labour, or they bring in another manager to take us to another level.

@Bure_Pavel Yes, that was a lineup strictly based on prospects and each of these guys will come into the league at different times so players will have different levels of experience. Also, like I said in my post, some of these guys could potentially get traded for young RFAs as early next year's draft (probably not until the summer though).
-
@Bure_Pavel but people whined when Benning brought in bottom 6 vets through UFA.
Lots of good centers in the upcoming draft. Being able to utilize EP on both the wing and at center will make Green's job a lot easier.
-
I'm playing NHL 16 be a GM with the Colorado Avalanche, and my lineup got too good. Here it is:
Landeskog - Duchene - Kucherov
Saad - Mackinnon - Nylander
Lemieux - Soderberg - Hansen
Haberstich - Chipchura - Dorsett
Klefbom - Pouliot
Chychrun - Burns
Meszaros - Barrie
Bobrovsky
Pickard
Haberstich is a young LW PWF, I always draft him in the third round because he usually develops into a good player (cheating I know). I need to make a trade but I don't know who to get rid of. My team is too young now so I'd probably want to trade a young'un for a vet. Mackinnon isn't progressing all that well, he's still scoring at a 2nd liner's pace. So maybe get rid of him for an upgrade to get a right handed 2C checker. We are the highest scoring team in the league, 2nd in GA, top 3 in PP%, top 5 in PK%. I've got Rantanen and another LW prospect, as well as 2 LDs knocking on the door for a taste in the big league. Pouliot is the leading Dman in scoring in the league, he's looking like Norris trophy candidate.
The core of the team is all between 20-27 years old. How would you move forward with this lineup?
-
@Alflives Alf, your posts always put a smile on my face Sorry that you lost so many good cards, but you get a story out of it now.
@thejazz97 Appreciate the tip anyways. NHL '16 is the most current NHL I own. I don't buy them every year because of how stupid expensive they are. I'll probably wait to get NHL '20 when it comes out. I know I'm cheap, but I hate corporations and I'm not giving them my money unless I absolutely have to.

There are 5 teams left that are real cup contender imo: Pittsburgh, Tampa, Boston, Nashville and Winnipeg. Who do you think has the best shot to take home the hardware?

@goalie13 Not necessarily. Obviously they are all good teams, but imo the other teams are on another level. Although VGK did look mighty good in game 1.
@Heretic That's actually a very good point you bring up. I did not quite think of it, but I can see that happening for sure. It's going to be a draining series for both teams... It'll be interesting to see how the team that moves on handles the next opponent. It's not just the physical stuff, the emotional toll of that series will be tough to get over.

Can I use this for my signature??
Phenominal work by the way!

Been feeling really down lately. I'm not finding consistency in my day to day life, and I cannot muster up any energy to do anything, even the things I used to love like working out or playing hockey. This is not a cry for help, I just want to know what others have done to get out of it... did you just wait it out, or make some big changes in your life or did something else...?
I think I just really need a girlfriend

@Alflives You're right I volunteered for a rec league called Halifax plays (I'm out on the east coast). It's a ball hockey league. I'm going to do that in the New Year as well.
@skategal I've definitely dealt with ups and downs before, but it wasn't like "having a bad day" kind of down, it is something that has been brewing for a while. I always feel weird about talking about that with friends/family for some reason. It's somewhat strange, I suppose, that I felt I can mention this on an online forum where I can stay anonymous...
-
Just to show how things will work out: Years ago Mrs. Alf and I bought a property at Crescent Beach (The east coast Crescent Beach, down past Bridgewater). Soon after the old Alf (me) started having troubles walking, and began his scooter days. I was extremely depressed, and figured my trips to our east coast get-a-way were over. Then, the wife bought a fancy van, and she drove me and my scooter across Canada. It was fun! Although my first day at the beach house, I looked out and realized wasn't getting over the rocks to the water. Depression set in again. Well, next I know, the wife's got me in the van again (with my scooter) and she is driving right onto the beach - literally. (You know, Crescent Beach is one lots of people drive on) We parked on the beach. She helped me into my scooter, and off I went. I even rolled into the surf. The coolest part was, once in the water, I was kind of free. It was an amazing feeling really.
Keep doing what you're doing, and letting people help you. Better days are ahead for you too
-
@Alflives You are one of my favourite posters on this forum and you've been putting a smile on my face ever since I've started noticing your posts on these boards. Thanks for sharing that memory, it put a huge smile on my face at work
I haven't been to crescent beach yet, but you can bet your bottom dollar that once I go down there in the summer I will think of you. The drive across Canada has been on the ol' bucket list for a while now. I think once I get settled into my new job, I'll see if I can get away for a few weeks and do it.
I have honestly been in a lot worse state of mind before but just didn't reach out. This time I was just wondering how other people dealt with it, so I wanted to get some input from others. I know I'm not the first or last person to go through a slump. I think waiting around for it to pass was the wrong move for me, I should have gone out and made some decisions. Live and learn.

Received a job offer in Nova Scotia for 61500 annually. Trying to work out the taxes so that I can figure out what my biweekly pay check looks like. Any help? (Yes I have googled stuff)

@VanGnomeif the currency isn't being stored inside the TFSA you can't do it and I inquired about using a large lump sum of money to buy a home with my TFSA and was told highly unlikely. You'd need to challenge that in court. You're better off with what I said above - two trading accounts one taxable one TFSA. But also like I said the CRA has lost in court and there are people who have made 6-7 figures tax free.
-
@peaches5 wow I didn't realize about the re-upping on the TFSA account I am shocked but fortunately I have never been in a position where I had to find that out first hand LOL
@VanGnome I believe that the purchase of said investment has to come from the TFSA account I don't know how crypto currency investments work with TFSAs. Stocks, commodities, mutual funds/indexes etc are all things you can for sure invest in through TFSA. You should probably contact an expert for how to do what you are proposing to involve a TFSA. It may be possible to do but I don't think there are clear rules about how you go about doing to guarantee the tax free status of returns on crypto currency.

Is the minus button back?????

Should Hutton be in the race for the Calder trophy? He finished the season playing top 4 mins and for an extended period of time he had to play on the top pairing and was relatively effective. His point totals aren't as great as Gostisbehere so maybe he doesn't win but imo he should be top 5 for the calder.
