I just want to crawl in a hole, and maybe cry a bit?.. idk... This sucks.

Eh I kind of prepared myself for us taking a step back. Not this much of one but still.

If there's anytime to have a reset year this is it. Give it 4-6 more games and if we are still bad then bite the bullet.

Pearson, Hamonic, Benn, Sutter could net us a decent return. Since Canadian teams don't want to wait for quarantine they could trade with us. Maybe start a bidding war to make sure other teams within the division don't get anything from us.

If Edler is willing to go he'd net us a lot.

Lots of possibilities.

Interesting. I totally believe he had a plan that got nixed. The Canucks cut more owed salary than almost every other NHL organization and barely added any salary (besides taking on Holtby and Schmidt) despite being up against the cap. I wish I could find the article talking about this but you can't slash the amount of salary the Canucks did and expect to be as good as the previous season.

From what I've heard, the Aquilini Investment Group has been getting hit hard by Covid and are bleeding cash. They own a lot of real estate and with the Provincial government freezing evictions at the same time people can't pay rent it means the Aquilini's are locked into a lot situations where they can't recover. They also have a huge stake in the Parq Casino & Hotel, and besides being a Casino in the wrong part of town, casinos themselves have been shut down since March of last year with no signs of reopening, have stakes in other hotels (which, as an industry have been hit hard by Covid), high end restaurants (like Elisa, Blue Water Cafe, and Thierry), office space holdings (as companies run remotely, companies aren't interest, at this moment, in locking in on leases of spaces they don't look to be using for the foreseeable future, leaving many office spaces vacant), construction has been slowed down by Covid leaving many residential projects delayed by months, if not a year or two, and as the owners of Rogers Arena they haven't been able to hold a concert or have the public in the arena since March 2020. The only sectors of the Aquilini Investment Group that appear to be doing okay during Covid times are the Energy + Subsidiaries sector and the Farming sector. You can read about all there business ventures here -- https://aquilini.com/

It's clearly not a pretty financial picture for the Aquilini's.

My bet is that Benning wanted to buyout Baertschi and maybe Sutter to keep Tanev and Markstrom. I also think Benning got pressured into pursuing OEL which led to the departures of Tanev & Stecher, specifically. I still think in the long term the Canucks made the right call walking away from Markstrom but it's a tough short term position to be in all things considered.

That said, the season's still young and I hope the young players remember how bad this loss stings.

Very good post, and I agree. Sat just said it again on 650 that they didn't choose Jake over Toffoli, it was more complex.

I agree that Benning would've liked to exercise buyouts to keep our players, even letting Jake walk too, but he was handcuffed by Aquallini's financial situation as you say (nevermind previous contracts).

I don't know about being 'pressured' on OEL, I think pursuing that made sense. But I could see a financial angle there were ownership saw it as beneficial. I agree on Markstrom.

Hopefully they can get this ship turned around soon, but with how our defense looks its going to be really difficult. Pettersson & Hughes are going to have to catch fire or we are going to be in alot of trouble.

The team last season was a very tight group. They played their hearts out and the rallied for one another. Marky, Tanev, Stecher were all very popular guys in the room along with Bo, Boeser and Miller. Toffoli may be a late addition, but he fit in with this group so well and the team really likes him well. In the playoffs in the Edmonton bubble, I have never seen a team this tight together and they were definitely all punching above their weight class.

This offseason due to cap reasons, we have to let go of all key players from last season and replace them with new comers in Holtby, Schmidt and Hamonic. Meanwhile, I don't doubt our new players are great people too, but this sort of chemistry takes time to develop. Let's be honest here, I still am not use to not seeing Markstrom, Tanev or Stecher on the team. Although, I do agree with the team not matching Calgary's contracts to keep Markstrom and Tanev, however, I still think they could've done better in retaining Stecher, Toffoli and Leivo.

I have said it in previous posts that I am most disappointed at this off-season because we didn't even bring back a single pending UFA. If I were in Benning's shoes, I would've done what I can (even if it means giving up some assets) to move out Beagle, Roussel, Sutter or Benn (as I know Eriksson and Baertchi are impossible). Or we could be more creative to cheat the cap by advising certain players to get a surgery done to fix their shoulder or leg so we can put them on the LTIR for atleast 1 full season (most professional atheletes have accumulate enough injuries in their career that they can probably get a doctor to sign off on a surgery).

Also to note, we our record against Canadian teams are absolutely horrendous last season. We are 5-10-0 against Canadian teams and 31-17-6 against American teams. Regarding Pettersson's current slump, last year, in 15 GP against Canadian teams, Pettersson only had 2 points, both came against Ottawa (1G-1A). I double checked to make sure, he only had 2 points against Canadian teams in 15 GP. It looks like this dry spell continued on with him this year. The bad news is, we don't get to play any other American teams unless we make it to the Conference Finals so Pettersson will have to snap out of this himself.

Not going to lie, when I heard rumours of an All-Canadian Division, I was worried because I was aware of our record against Canadian teams last season. I was actually secretly hoping the Provincial Governments to not allow hockey to be played so all 7 Canadian teams will just have to play in Arenas in the States (don't flame me, this is all just Canucks first thinking). I hinted the idea of rather Canucks to play their games in the states on Canucks reddit, and holy, I was heavily downvoted like I committed treason.

In reality, I feel like whatever could go wrong had gone wrong from the off-season to return to play. I just hope the team still play games with pride the rest of the way. I look forward for some lottery ball luck and get us a top 3 pick so we can draft Luke Hughes to the team.

Not trying to be a downer, but I just think it is time to let reality settle in. I am not even going to bring up the poor contracts and the cap, because this topic is beaten to death. Seattle Expansion is a blessing in disguise, I would expose every single one of our overpaid veterans and see Seattle will just pick one out of the bunch. My feeling is Seattle either picks off Holtby or they may just pick out an AHLer to avoid getting into a cap problem.

We should be in a much better place cap wise next season. Pettersson and Hughes poor performance this year could mean we get cheaper bridge deals out of them and we can start building towards a contender as soon as next season. In the end, this season is going to be 3 months, so short term pain for long term gain.

I can see a player's only meeting happening if we lose the next game again

For sure.  Of course, if we win the next one we can say we won the series vs a decent Habs team.  Especially if we play anything close to resembling decent team D.

What a weird start to the season.

Armia is 6’3”. The “big man bad” defence isn’t gonna fly. It was a dirty blind side hit.

He didn't see it coming but it's a fast game, only thing I see is Myers rising a bit at the end. If they deem the head the primary point of contact I could see him getting a game or two, but it doesn't look malicious imo.
