June 15, 2011 was the worst date in sports history in Vancouver (at least until EP lifts Lord Stanley over his head).

  2. Is there a Battle of Alberta thread? There should be a Battle of Alberta thread. This rivalry is back, its real, and its spectacular.

It's gonna be awesome running over Alberta teams for a decade, again.

Not gonna lie, it even has me interested, which is saying something from a guy who pretty much never watches hockey outside Canuck games.

      Down by the River

I think Canucks fans are not appreciating the opportunity to watch these two teams kill each other.

  3. You could piss on my shoes and somehow I'd be less annoyed with you than the person that tells me "Thanks in advance" when they sign off on their email.

  5. Draisaitl is more valuable to the Oilers than McDavid.

      Down by the River

I see it as the exact opposite. Draisaitl is responsible for doing all the little things that free up McDavid. He takes draws, he retrieves loose pucks/wins puck battles. McDavid gets to focus almost exclusively on the offensive side of the puck, which is pretty atypical of someone who is a quote-unquote center.

    3. #Canucks

      #Canucks

@Down by the River I appreciate your perspective. There is definitely an argument there. McDavid does back check and win pick battles too. @Coconuts They are definitely benefactors if each other!

    4. Coconuts

      Coconuts

That's a fair view. Draisaitl may shoulder some of the burden a typical center takes on but McDavid also has to do those things to an extent. I'd also argue that McDavid's sheer offensive talent frees up Draisaitl to play to his highest potential. It's almost a bit of a symbiotic relationship.

  6. Lebron James is great at taking stands against social injustice when he has a chance to directly profit from it. A lot harder to stand up for someone's rights when the system violating those rights makes you millions.

      NewbieCanuckFan

I really wonder what Lebron’s feeling on the issue would be had the country in question been South Africa circa the Apartheid years.  I don’t know but just putting out that question.

    3. Toews

      Toews

I thought athletes like Kaepernick and Lebron were sincere in their desire to shine a light on the injustices in this world. That was my own naivety. The older you get the more you begin to understand people and the world we live in.

    4. Down by the River

      Down by the River

Lebron says he was talking about the implications of critiquing China while players are in China. How about this. If you are in business with someone and you fear that they will bring you harm because of something said by someone else that you have a loose affiliation with, maybe this isn't someone you should be in business with? Or, feel free to continue doing business with them but step off your pedestal before you do it.

Personally I came on board with respecting Sid after I saw this video - I really respect that he comes back home in the city that made him and gives back to the community by training with the kids there.

I have almost no respect for guys like Sakic that pretty much did as little as possible to give back to Burnaby

^ Jim Hughson had potential, but he totally mailed it in once he got the top CBC spot. Even when he calls TO games, he just doesn't seem to do it for me any more. The reason why I put Cole > Hewitt is because of longevity. He's been doing this for 50 years. I've never known a world where Bob Cole wasn't calling games... and this is true for about half of all hockey fans.

    4. King Heffy

      King Heffy

I'll really miss him.  Still easily the 2nd best guy out of the HNIC bunch after Hughson, even at his advanced age.  Quite simply the voice of hockey for multiple generations and a consummate professional.

Wish him a long and happy retirement.

  12. Brady Keeper's NHL debut tonight. Heard his story on the Spittin Chicklets podcast. Almost quit college hockey to move home to take care of his family. Even when he was called up to FLA, he didn't have enough $ for a flight. Kid has a ton of character.

@RRypien37 I didn't really explain that well. I think it was like an oversized baggage cost. A mentor in college covered the cost. Kid had 63 cents in his bank account. Has two kids (one biological) and is just 22. Really incredible.

  13. If the NHL is going to keep collecting +/- data, they should at least stop giving guys a -/+ for an empty net goal.

  14. Crosby on an absolute tear.

Crosby is a more complete player. I think McDavid is a better player, offensively, and could probably out skate Crosby, but all around Crosby is better.

Sids defensive play is better, he's better at face offs, his accuracy is better, and his overall awareness is better. Sid is THE complete player. It's why he's better than Ovechkin, and it's why he's the greatest of all time.

    3. Shift-4

As much as I despise Malkin, he too is a franchise player.  Like when the Avs had Sakic and Forsberg, that’s a formidable duo to face.  Like imagine having TWO EPs on the team.

    1. NewbieCanuckFan

      NewbieCanuckFan

Wasn’t THAT long ago that the Canucks finished first overal in the standings (2011-2012 season).  They were also top 5 in goals scored and top five in goals against.

      i'm gonna say 44%

    4. Brad Marchand

      Brad Marchand

McDavid's points to Oilers goals ratios from the last two seasons:

      2016-17: 100/243 (41.1%)

      2017-18: 108/229 (47.2%)

He will almost certainly be in the 40-45% range again.
