  1. Would Dallas want anything for Spezza or could we get him as a cap dump?

Maybe something like McEneny and a 4th for Spezza and a 3rd?

    3. coastal.view

      coastal.view

i'd do that, but if we are giving a 4th and mcenemy i think i'd want a 2nd round instead of the 3rd

canucks really could use for 1 year only

a quality and experienced 2nd line centre

so spezza is an excellent fit for vancouver

we'd lose someone else from our roster as a result as well

which would pay a portion of spezza contract (bye bye gagner?)

    4. JM_

      JM_

better to wait and see if they land Karlsson and then they have to move Spezza, assuming thats not part of the Ottawa deal. If its not we could likely get a nice return for helping them shed that contract, maybe even send Gagner back their way.

  2. I keep going back and forth between what I want to see happen next year. I think Pettersson is a huge x-factor and if he and Hughes are ready they’ll make an impact imo.

I want the all or nothing scenario: either have the rookies help carry this team to the playoffs or be bad enough to win the draft lottery and get Jack Hughes.

Obviously wishful thinking but one can dream, right?

I think Pettersson wins the Calder.  He's the 1OA in a re-draft already in my view.

  5. Despite being let go Todd Harkins brought in a massive haul for the Cougars future over a span of a couple weeks and just now I’m starting to realize just how huge it really was.

  6. What kind of a season is Swift Current expected to have next year? They’ll be losing a bunch of players to graduation and the Cougars have their 1st for 2019

  11. All in all I like the signings Benning made today. Who cares if he gave Beagle and Roussel and extra year than originally reported. If Benning goes out and gets a 2C we could have a really solid forward group next season.

Honestly Id rather see Pettersson in the AHL at centre now then trying to make him a centre after playing wing long term in the NHL. If Pettersson isn't ready to be an NHL centre then send him down and bring in Gaudette as 4C. Bo-Sutter-Beagle-Gaudette

    3. JM_

      JM_

Our best shot at a 2C is probably in some sort of Tanev-based deal. Let the threads begin!

TO desperately needs a Tanev-type D... but I just can't see them coughing up Nylander 1:1. Maybe if we eat the Horton contract.

  13. I think I’ve made a decision on how I want next year to go. If Benning improves the top six then I’ll say push for the playoffs. If he only signs Roussel and Beagle then I’m ok with tanking for one more year.

    1. Guile

      Guile

In the latter scenario, which is also my preferred, I expect Boeser, Horvat, Pettersson, Gaudette, etc. to get tons of offensive opportunity and develop strongly. We will again be in a position to sell some vets at the deadline, including MDZ and possibly (unlikely) Edler, leaving the possibility of Juolevi getting 20 games at the end of the year. If our young core was to carry the team into a playoff position, who could possibly complain?

  14. I could see Benning still adding one top six forward via free agency and trading for a 2C for Pettersson before the summer is over.

I could see the same riot if it ever came out that JB had a great offer on the table and passed on it simply because it involved a 2019 draft pick.  GMs in this town are damned either way.  There's always a group of critics no matter what choice they make.

      DADDYROCK

Of course, you know that with Canuck luck that would be the year we get our first 1OA pick and lose it.

      BUILD THROUGH THE DRAFT,AND,

DO NOT TRADE FIRST ROUND PICKS,

MOST STARS ARE IN THAT ROUND,AND WE COULD USE A FEW MORE.

  17. Looks like Boston would probably like to get rid of Krejci or Backes to free up a little cap space. Would anyone go after Krejci if the price was reasonable?

      @Pears

Might have robbed him of his mojo.

Or maybe the fact that the first goal he scored as a Canuck was an empty netter, ON HIS OWN GOAL! FFS that was awful

In my expert opinion he's got some bad juju, not doucheitis. Doucheitis affects an inviduals ability to not act like a total a**hole.

They blame others for their mistakes and are unable to accept personal responsibility for their selfish, cowardly and narcissistic actions.

Eriksson has bad Canuck juju. They should send him to a sweatlodge. Then first thing in the morning beat him up a bit with cold cedar bows before sending him for a swim in the ocean.

Almost guaranteed to change his luck.

the problem with older guys  they want term,  given the youth and recent drafts  ,2  ,3 years  were there. stay the course.

  18. Cougars are getting someone unreal in the import draft on Wednesday. They have the 5th pick which is higher than i originally thought.

  19. After signing six free agents last summer, could we/should sign the same amount again this summer? We certainly have the cap space to do so. I’m thinking 3-4 roster players and 2 players for Utica.

We’d have to make a couple trades to make it work but I’d like to see Beagle and Reaves for the fourth line, someone like Nash or Neal to play with Horvat and Boeser, and a 2C to play with Pettersson.

i hope the want to sell tickets so they go with their youth.

or they can sign a handfull of d grade ufas that nobody wants to see and not sell tickets and miss the playoffs.

But spender jim has a tough time with self control come ufa time.

      ”no big fish”.

  20. So if Hughes is actually ready to play next year I could see something like this

    ___ - Horvat - Boeser

    Goldobin - ___ - Pettersson

    Leipsic - Sutter - Virtanen

    Gaunce - Granlund - Eriksson

    Edler - Stecher

    Hughes - Tanev

    Pouliot - Gudbranson

I think if Hughes shows he’s ready that’ll give Juolevi some time to develop in the AHL. As for Baertschi, I’m just under the impression that he’ll be traded.

One of the few guys I'd move the 7OA pick.  The Blues are nuts to consider moving him.  I'd also give them Tanev to get this done.

    3. Roger Neilsons Towel

      Roger Neilsons Towel

I’d be willing to do the 7th OA + Tanev. Possibly a small adder, but no prospects. I’m sure the Blues will ask more, and they can get it from someone else. Any more than that and I would prefer the Canucks continue to rebuild through the draft.

    4. Pears

      Pears

I’d do something like 7th overall, Goldobin and like Stecher to give them another defenseman. Trade Tanev for a mid-1st to ensure we still get a 1st.

  22. Would a package involving Tanev and Tyler Johnson be fair/realistic?

    2. Quantum

      Quantum

Honestly, I've kind of thought that sort of swap would make a lot of sense. Gives Pettersson some time to adjust to the NHL, he's an offensive minded centreman (who is currently being usurped in the TBL lineup by the younger/cheaper Yanni Gourde), he's localish (Johnson is from Spokane), and TBL needs to dump a contract soon as they start re-signing there young guys... Plus, he's 27. So he's just young enough to grow with this new core but just old enough to be a bit of an "NHL veteran". Question is -- will TBL want more from the Canucks to do this. I think this deal is possible for both sides. I guess the other question would be -- who in the Canucks depth chart would replace Tanev?

    3. JustABandwagoner

It makes a lot of sense. But Tampa should add. They are the ones operating under a deadline (Johnson has a full NTC that starts July 1st).

  23. With how it stands now we technically have the cap space to sign two big ticket free agents. If we make a couple trades we could fit them in no problem. How realistic would that scenario be?

as it stands today there should be close to 27 mil, with 6 RFAs to sign who should all come in around the 2 mil mark or so, assuming we want them all back.

So certainly room to improve with decent depth guys and have some money left over that the TDL to maybe facilitate some trades by us taking on salary for another team for picks.
